Forest Clearing You follow a path through the dense vegetation, pushing at last into a clearing of such haunting beauty that you stop, holding your breath in quiet awe. Brown columns of towering redwoods, their tops lost in the misty green overhead, surround the patch of emerald grass at your feet. Shafts of golden sunlight stream down through the branches above you, spotlighting a small tree growing in the center of the clearing, it's branches weighed down with tiny, fragrant pink flowers. A small brooklet, at it's widest point barely two feet, wends it's way through the clearing and disappears into the forest below. The muted sounds of the rest of the forest still reach your ears. Will you follow their call and return to the forest....or pause here a while to gather your thoughts and refresh your mind and body? Ifile-tu pads into the clearing, smiling as she looks around. "I love coming here It's always so peaceful and calm." Ahrish bounds after Ifi, grinning. "I guess so... Can we go to the beach again today?" Ifile-tu turns to you with a grin. "No, today we're going to settle here and study....I think bugs. How does that sound?" Ahrish giggles. "I wasn't REALLY watching bugs that day, Mom.. I was thinking." Ifile-tu strides across the shorter grass settling down beside a rock and looking back to you, her eyes full of laughter. "I know. But, studying bugs can be a lot of fun." Ahrish giggles and bounds up in front of Ifi. "I don't see how.. they don't even get threatening like the litle crabs do. :)" Ifile-tu chuckles. "No, usually they don't threaten, but if you watch them, it makes you realize just how industrious those little things are. And, besides.... they tickle!" Ahrish giggles. "They aren't even smart enough to know when they're in trouble... they walk right under your paws. I think we should go to the beach instead." Ifile-tu noses you before she reaches out and scoops you towards her. "No, the beach is too far to go today. Dad should be waking up soon and I don't want him to miss me." She nuzzles you and then asks. "Are you hungry? I know there are some berries around here somewhere." Ahrish humphs and then perks her ears at the mention of food. "Berries? That sounds neat... can we get a rabbit later, then? :)" Ifile-tu laughs. "I think we could probably find one." She gets to her paws and licks the top of your head. "You wait right here and I'll be back very quickly. They're not too far away." With another grin, she pads off into the trees and is soon lost from your sight. Ahrish looks around. Spying a beetle, she pads to it, and bats it across the path "Stupid bugs." She giggles. Vukamfupa stalks through the forest, her narrow eyes flickering with an icy cold murderous glare. She steps without making a sound through the bursh and trees, her keen nose catching the scent of something.... but what? Ahrish keeps after the beetle batting it again, giggling louder. "C'mon, beetle bug, get me back!" Vukamfupa smiles cruely, slowly, steelthfully, she begins to sneak into the clearing. Ahrish giggles and bats the bug again, spinning to watch it, and stopping dead as she catches sight of the hyena. look vukamfupa Before you stands the nobelest of the wretched looking hyena's. Her fadded, mottled sides are a tattered and torn ash brown. However, a deep jagged scar ravages the side of her body and seems to have destroyed the promise of a future line. Many other scars ravege her body. Her mane is as that of a traveler, a rogue. But, her sly eyes glimmer with a look of longing.... for a better life, the one she had once had. Her mangey tail swishes from side to side in thought as she watches you through golden brown eyes, and a sly smile, you better watch yourself or you'll be sorry! Vukamfupa growls and raises her hackles, madness ablaze in her darkened eyes! Ahrish's curiousity fades quickly, and she first looks frightened, then digs her claws in and growls back. "Who're you?" It's a challenge, more than a question. Vukamfupa takes to her heals and leaps the rest of the distance her paws wrapping clumsily around your form. "Your doom! Cubbie!" Hot drool drips from her mouth as her jaws fly over your back to find a hold Ahrish's eyes go wide and she screams instinctively, any thought of defense gone. She squirms and tries to wriggle free before your jaws find secure hold. Vukamfupa strong, but uncoordinated jaws find a hold over the flanks. her front paws scramble to try and catch the rest of you, she leaves many little slashes o over you front paws and sides. Ahrish screams louder as the hyena's teeth sink in, blood beginning to flow. She twists and flails extended claws at any part of the hyena in reach, crying in pain and raw terror Vukamfupa's reels as her throat feels the pricks of tiny cubbie claws! She snarls and flings your grasped body into the air at a sickening speed, causing your head and paws to flop haphazardly around. Deep in the woods, Ifi's head lifts as she thinks she hears something. She shrugs to herself as the sound isn't repeated and continues to gather the berries onto a leaf. Ahrish's screams continue as she's flopped helplessly, now disoriented as well and no longer fighting back, just squirming and trying to break the painful grip. Vukamfupa throws you a fair distance, she spits out the blood that accumalated in her throat. She stalks forwards towards your fallen body, watching for any signs of life. Ahrish's head lifts enough to recognize the threat, but she falls when she tries to get to her paws. She screams again, calling, "Ifi! Help me!" She tries to push herself back.. to little avail. Noses the leaf over itself, enclosing the berries. She picks it up with a grin and slowly makes her way back towards the clearing. Vukamfupa slinks forwards and grabs your paw, snapping it like a twig. "Haha! This is fun! How long can you last, Cubbie?" She snarls, leaning over the body grinning and dripping with blood and saliva. "I can just TASTE you!" Ahrish screams anew as her limb snaps, now fading into a deep sobbing of fear and helplessness. "I didn't do anything.." she cries.. Ifile-tu is only a short distance when the snarl reaches her. With a gasp, she drops the leaf, her hackles rising and crashes through the trees. "Ahrish!!!" Vukamfupa giggles in a hyena manner. "You were born, that's enough!" Vukamfupa raises up her head, her body covered in blood she releases a howl like never before. Cold and bloodcurdling, truely her senses are not with her! "This is for you AGIZA!!" Ahrish cringes, making herself as small as she can under the hyena, who now seems like a massive unstoppable force Ifile-tu skids to a halt, the scene before her bringing a low growl deep in her chest. Moving forward with a measured slowness, she stops and shudders at the howl. "Who are you?" she growls, trying to pull your attention away from the cub. Vukamfupa's jaws flash down and strike the cub, ripping a gash into it's side. Then, snakelike, her neck swivels to look to lioness, she grins cruelly. "Ahahaa! Another one to add to my victory list. Hehehehe!" Vukamfupa taunts. "Here kitty kitty! Come meet DEATH!" Ifile-tu stalks forward a few more feet. "Leave the cub. She's hardly a meal. Come get me!" Ahrish screams anew at the tear, then goes quiet, shivering Vukamfupa kicks the cub visciously aside with a snort. She lengthens her stance. "Hmmmmm, you are more tempting! Much more of a meal." Vukamfupa strides forwards, licking her blood covered maw, bloodlust glowing in her eyes. Ifile-tu's muscles tense, preparing for whatever this creature might do. Nightmare visions of Pride Rock flash through her mind, but she pushes them back. Wincing at the viscious kick, her attention is pulled from you to Ahrish. Vukamfupa leaps at the distracted lioness! Her claws out and ready to rake across her sides as she plows into her!! Ahrish lays where she lands from the kick, barely moving now... her half-open eyes only sometimes making sense of what she sees Ifile-tu quickly picks Ahrish up, turning and carrying her to a sheltered spot beneath a bush. "Stay here, no matter what. I know it hurts, I'll help you as soon as I can." She turns just in time to see Vukampfu leap at her..but too late to do anything but take the blow to her side. Vukamfupa lands to the side, huffing with adrenaline, she turns her claws on you, tearing and slashing at any flesh they can find! Ifile-tu's side is torn by the claws, blood flowing freely. But she doesn't notice it as she scrambles back to her paws and growls as she tumbles you off of her. Raising a paw, sharp claws unsheathed, she rakes them across your side before you can dash away. Vukamfupa growls as her side explodes in pain! Taking a moment to recollect herself, she slinks around snarling. "That's it! Lioness! NOW you die! No one hits Vukamfupa and lives - NO ONE!" She dashes is for a low blow, arching her neck around to try and bite at your belly! Ifile-tu gasps, twisting away before you can connect. She swirls around trying to come at you from behind with a powerful swipe of her paw. Too terrified to even reply to your words, she tries to remember what little she knows of fighting. Vukamfupa is with sheer luck able to duck the swipe, her jaws flash up after the paw, catching it and digging in deeply! Ifile-tu shrieks, blinded for a moment by the fierce pain. She tries to ignore it, to push it back as she attempts to scramble away. Using her other paw, she once again strikes out, catching the side of your head and managing to fling you away from her. Vukamfupa flops off to the side, she shakes her head about abit. Taking a moment to get her barings back, she turns and lunges back at you! Claws splayed out aiming for the vulnerable back,. Ifile-tu , panting heavily, swerves again, but the paw is injured too badly and buckles beneath her, causing her to stumble and almost fall. Only sheer determination keeps her on her feet. Using your tactics, she bares her teeth and growls deeply.. before you connect with her back and she can't stop herself from shrieking once more at the white hot pain. Vukamfupa body falls by gravity over you, raking long narrow slashes over the whole back! But she has too much momentum and flops over the other side in a heap. Ifile-tu grits her teeth, fighting the pain as she pushes herself bck to her paws. Until now, she was fighting because you were and because of what you did to Ahrish. Now, she realizes she's fighting for her life! Stumbling a little, she manages to get to you before you can rise and with a roar that encompasses all her pain, she slashes open your side. Ahrish lifts her head a little, fighting unconsciousness to watch, frightened of either outcome. Vukamfupa wails out in pain! The new scar slashed over the one that left her pupless. But the pain now takes her to a whole new level! Her eyes reopen in a wide, savage gleam, her claws tear the earth even as she stands on it! Pain now means nothing to her! Her paws grips the earth and she propels herself into your form at lightening speed! Ballistic is the word! Ifile-tu totally unprepared for your reaction, Ifi is knocked off her feet and sent sprawling..her blood smearing across the grass. Only the rock prevents her from going farther, stopping her body with a sickening cracking sound. Now added to the pain that seems to have taken over her entire body, is the shocking feeling of not being able to breath. She tries to push herself up, blindly reaching for the rock's support. But her paw misses and for a heartstopping moment, it appears she is finished. Vukamfupa begins to laugh, she stalks up behind you, giggling like her true hyena self. She believes the lioness is done for and her cocky nature takes over. Leaning down she sinks her teeth deeply into her right hind leg and yanks her head back slightly to the side, ripping a nice portion of flesh with it! Ifile-tu's breath is forced back into her broken chest by the sheer force of this new pain...so intense that it makes her vomit. Struggling to not lose consciousness, she strikes out blindly, not aiming at anything just trying to stay alive. And, for a moment, the gods are with her. She manages to connect with your chest and lift you up, tossing you away from her. Vukamfupa flies through the air and hits the ground HARD! For a long time she lays there panting and coughing, seeing double! After a very long moment she gets clumsily to her paws, beyond sense, beyond pain, and WELL beyond anything earthly she relentlessly advances upon your bleeding form! Losing blood fast, unable to breath beyond a shallow pant and dizzy with pain, Ifi is slowly losing touch with her surroundings. She tries to get up, but only manages to half rise on one paw before she falls back with a low moan. Even as she slowly begins to die, her eyes no longer able to see...she tries to find Ahrish. Ahrish still lays under the bush, unsure of her own surroundings, flitting in and out of consciousness and barely even aware that Ifi is in trouble.. Vukamfupa leaps upon Ifile, her claws dig deeply in! Her jaws close around the neck leaving many deep punctures! Many times she rakes her weakening claws across the back. Her fight is determined, but lacks the earlier power. Ifile-tu helplessly struggles, only instinct driving her movements. She's beyond pain now, slipping into a cold but welcome darkness. Not even the ruthless destroying of her body can pull her back. With a whispered..."Kiasi......" she slips into the dark. Vukamfupa stumbles backwards to catch her breath a bit. She stands over the boby, grinning and cackling. "Hehehee! It's over Kitty! It's over!!!" Agiza has arrived. There is no reaction. The lioness lies silent and still. Agiza slinks in, sniffing the air, the scent of blood having lead her here. She narrows her eyes as she spies Vuka and begins to stalk up to her, cruelty coming back into her old, soft eyes. Her claws flex with the power and skill unneeded in years! Vukamfupa leans her head back in a victory howl! She lifts her claws in preparation to kill! Agiza waits til she is just inches away from her sworn enemy. Snarling as she leaps, "You last HOWL EVER, Venomous swine!" Vukamfupa's bloodcovered form turns in horror at the sound of Agiza's voice! She wails out as her body is forced backwards by the more experienced ones claws, Agiza slams Vuka into the ground and pins her with all four paws, her better fed body holding more weight. Vukamfupa kicks out with her hind paws. "NOOO! I WON! I WAS VICTORIOUS! YOU CAN'T TAKE IT FROM ME!" Agiza slashes Vuka across her alreadt torn head. "SHUT UP!" Agiza's other four paws find holds and begin to wrench the flesh in tiny knots. Vukamfupa screams out in pain and terror. "NO! You were always the better hunter! You always succeeded! You left me to starve! It's not fair! Let me live, Agiza! Please!!!" Ahrish drags herself out of the bush a bit, the new screams giving her something to focus on in the real world. She tries to watch, trying to make sense of what she sees. Agiza's jaw darts down and catches the cowards belly, she bite deep, deeper then Vuka ever could have dreamed. Outside damage looks like nothing but a bite, but internally the bleeding tissues paralyze Vuka with agony! Slowly Agiza steps off of her old hunting partner, her stern face watching darkly. A wind sweeps across the forest and catches her hair. Agiza is motionless. Vukamfupa wails out. "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! OWWWWW!" She rolls onto her side, pulling her body miserably by her front paws. "Please! Mercy! Mercy!" She crawls towards Agiza, When in reach her right paw slashes forwards, she tries to cacth Agiza with her dewclaw.... she'd forgotten she broke it yesterday! Now she stares up in horror. Agiza pulls her paw back, her jaws lash forward and puncture Vuka's neck deeply as well, but this time she doesn't let go. She holds the manuaver until Vuka's breathing becomes a harsh rasp. Only then does she let the head flop to the ground. Agiza stands vigil over the dying hyena. Nasiha has arrived. Agiza stands over Vuka, panting quietly, her stren gaze glued to her for any tricks. You hear a crashing, crackling sound as someone or something comes tearing through the forest and towards the clearing. Pushing his way through the last few tangled vines, an ancient mandrell half tumbles into the clearing. Breathless, his eyes take in the carnage. But they are searching for one creature, and when he sees her lying motionless is a spreading pool of blood, he moans and rushes forward. "Ah, my little one...my Ifi. What have you done?" Agiza looks over to the strang creature, she cocks her head and defensivly asks. "Who are you?" Vukamfupa coughs and sputters... but her bloating belly is proof enough that soon she will be dead. Nasiha settles his creakingly old joints down beside Ifi, his eyes raking over the injuries. Only then does he lift his head to look around at the others. "I am Nasiha. How are the rest of them? Who else has been injured?" Ahrish lays half under the bush Ifi tried to hide her under, her eyes half-open but glazed, not seeing, her own blood matted through her fur. Agiza nsort back to the heap of bones beside her. "This one will have bleed to death before any hope to return. But there is a cub over there, Ahrish. She will need attention. Obviously this one's first target." She kicks Vuka in the gut! Vukamfupa gives a gurgling scream, clutching her belly. Nasiha quickly regains his composure, taking on the demeanor of the ancient healer that he is. Setting down his gourds, he stands and bows to Agiza. "I am a healer of the Mlimani Pride. Ifile-tu's Father's Pride. But, we have no time for talk." He nods at Agiza's explanation, wincing at Vukampfu's scream. "That is what caused all of this?" Nasiha is looking around for the cub as he speaks. Knowing little ones have less blood to lose, he reluctantly goes to it first. "Come out little one, let me see what has been done to you." Agiza nods sternly. "I knew she was lurking about, I just didn't think she'd try anything so suicidal. She is finished now, the crossbone will never strike another again." Nasiha gives Agiza a curt nod. "Perhaps it would be kind to just finish her off. I may need your help here with the others." Nasiha turns back to Ahrish, still attempting to coax her out. Agiza takes a quick look to the other and snorts. "She's not going anywhere, what do you need?" Ahrish moans a little and is semi-conscious.. she responds to Nasiha's voice but doesn't move far, blood loss draining her strength Ifile-tu continues to lie silently where she fell, an ever widening pool of blood surrounding her still form. Vukamfupa clutches her belly even more. She whimpers and whines, but steadily.. her cry is growing weaker. Nasiha squats down, realizing the little cub is in much worse shape than he had first thought. Very gently, knowing that no matter how gentle he is it will hurt her, he pulls her out from her hiding place and half carries her to the soft, cool grasses. Lying her down he lies a hand on her brow. "Hush now. Let's see what that creature has done to you." Ahrish squeals with the pain of being moved, but it fades quickly. "Bugs... Ifi?" she mutters. She drifts in and out. Besides being nearly covered with cuts and bites, there is a deep bite over her haunches where she was grabbed, and her foreleg has been broken from another hard bite. Agiza pads forwards silently, she leans down and watches. Nasiha quickly and with great gentleness, slides his hands over the cubs body. He notes the cuts and scrapes and what appears to be a broken paw. And, muttering, he takes stock of the bleeding. Turning to Agiza, he sweeps his gaze over her. "You are alright? She didn't injure you?" Vukamfupa finally grows silent, her eyes staring blankly.. her breathing shallowing. Nasiha's eyes keep getting pulled back to the silent form of his Ifi. "Gods.." he whispers. "it's not her time. Not yet." Agiza shakes her head. "Never had a chance to, I am swifter and more careful then she is, not to mention, I helped train her to fight before she turned on me. So I knew what she would try and what she wouldn't expect." Nasiha nods, satisfied with your answer. "Then, I must ask for you assistance. I need cobwebs..a great deal of them. Would you know where to find them?" Agiza nods. "Sure thing, be right back." Agiza scuttles off into the forest.... Agiza strides back in moments later with a mouthful of them. Nasiha is rising to his feet as he speaks. He takes one of the gourds he was carrying, one with a long hollow spout, and walks over to the brook. Leaning down, he quickly fills it and moves back to the cub's side. Squating, he reaches into one of the other gourds and chooses several leaves, crumbling them and dropping them over the water. After a few moments, he picks up the gourd and inserts the spout into Ahrish's mouth. "Drink some of this. It will lessen the pain." Nasiha looks up to Agiza, nodding towards the gourds. "Please place them there. Tell me, old one, have you ever aided a healer?" Agiza cocks her head after she places them one the ground in the determined place. "Ummm... no. Only been on the other side." Ahrish's tongue slips out to the liquid... and she seems to take some Nasiha nods. "Good. No preconceived notions then. I need you to see that she drinks this. I'm going to use these cobwebs to stop the bleeding. Then I'll take a look at that paw." Agiza nods, she leans down and takes the gourd in her mouth, holding it over to Ahrish. Nasiha lifts small handfulls of the cobwebs and carefully packs them against the punctures and the deeper gouges. He leaves the shallower ones for nature to heal all by herself. When Ahrish begins to look like a patchwork cub, he sits back and makes certain he missed none. Then, glancing up to be sure she's drinking enough to ease the pain, he leans back down and runs his hands over her paw. "Good." He murmurs to himself. "Still straight and together." Ahrish tries to lick one in a while, slowly the pain begins to subside and she can spend more time conscious than not. She lays fairly still.. breathing slowly.. Agiza continues to hold the gourd for Ahrish to drink. Nasiha looks back up to Agaiza. "If we keep her quiet and that paw unmoved, she's going to be just fine. Agiza's eyes acknowledge that she heard. Nasiha sighs, getting to his feet and gathering his gourds and the rest of the cobwebs. "Now..the gods willing...she will be too." Slowly, he makes his way to the silent lioness's side. Agiza watches over Ahrish as Nasiha works on the lioness. Vukamfupa lies there, wasting away.... Ahrish's head swims with thoughts and feelings, and the painkillers don't help her think straight at all. "Ifis?" she whispers. Nasiha groans silently as he inventories her injuries. "Too much blood. Way too much blood." Squatting beside her, his gentle hands run over her body as he mumbles to himself. "..cuts, gouges, punctures, a tear here, uhmmmmm...a cracked rib, I think, bites, and.." He sighs once more as he comes to her leg. "And....then ther is this. Oh, I wonder if I can save her leg?" Agiza sets down the gourd and sighs, she runs her tongue over the top of Ahrish's head. "There there, it's going to be alright." Nasiha straightens his aching shoulders, reminding himself what he is. Offering a silent plea to the great Kings, he rises to his feet and pads over to Ahrish's side. "How is she? Is the pain eased?" "Bugs," mutters Ahrish. Agiza clears her throat. "she's a bit dilerious, but she seems a bit more comfortable." Nasiha leans down and picks up the mostly empty gourd, turning without waiting for an answer and moving back to the waters. Once again he fills it, coming back to his supplies and sitting down to sift through them. He chooses several leaves again, crumbling them over the surface of the water. But this time he adds a flower to the brew. Sifting through the pile, he then picks up a tiny twig that has already been stripped of it's bark and drops that in too. Now, he must wait. Agiza lies down beside the cub, tucking her larger, and rather warm form around her to keep her warm. Agiza's words break through his contemplation and he looks up. "That is good. Tomorrow, if she is no worse, we will add marrow to her water. That will help rebuild her blood." Agiza nods slowly to herself, she begins to hmm softly, trying to break through to comfort the cub. Ahrish hears the sounds... and vaguely recognizes them as warm and comforting. She wriggles a little bit against Agiza, softly Nasiha smiles, agreeably surprised by this old ones gentleness. He watches her for a little longer as the brew steeps, wishing it would happen quicker, but knowing well that time cannot be hurried. Agiza chuckles softly, hoping her happier tone comforts her little charge. Ahrish seems more comfortable, her breathing more regular, though she lies very still most of the time. Agiza lays her head down, resting a bit after her adrenaline rush. She finds herself rather sleepy as well. Nasiha finally deems it long enough and lifts the gourd, swirling the water a little before he very gently inserts it into the unconscious lionesses muzzle and lets just a drop at a time trickle down. "Swallow Ifi...please swallow. This will ease your pain." Ifile-tu lies unmoving and unaware. Nasiha keeps dripping the water into her throat, well aware she will die from blood loss if he doesn't keep fluids in her. Agiza's ears flicker, she watches the mandrill work, hoping herself. Ahrish's eyes open again, and seem to swim into focus for a moment... "Ifi's hurt," she says bluntly... but it's uncertain if it's a question or a statement. Several moments pass with no reaction from Ifi. Nasiha carefully sets the gourd down, ready now to do what he can with the wounds and the bleeding. The daunting task breaks his heart, but he sets to work.....one wound at a time. Using clean leaves dipped in the brew, he cleans them and then packs each with the dwindling pile of cobwebs. Agiza nuzzles the young one. "It's alright, Nasiha is here to help her." Ahrish speaks softly, her voice weak. "She's going away.. too... ?" Although this must be causing pain, there is no reaction whatever from Ifi. She has, for the moment, retreated far away from the pain. Agiza noses Ahrish. "No, Ifi is going to be alright and you're going to be alright." Ahrish whispers again, before slipping back to sleep.. "I'm a big girl..." Agiza heaves a sigh and continues to monitore her breathing. Nasiha realizes he is running out of the precious cobwebs. He doesn't want to disturb Agiza since Ahrish is taking do much comfort from her. So, he gets to his feet and moves over to the rocks along the water, knowing from experience that he will probably find more there. Nasiha's luck holds out and he returns with great armfulls of the cobwebs. He settles back to continuing his work, leaving her face and her leg for last. Nasiha uses great care with the many puncture and bite wounds he finds covering her face and neck. "If I can prevent it, little one, you won't be too scarred." Looking over the bruising and swelling that have started to show, he wonders just how brash that statement is? Agiza's eyelids begin to drift closer together. She naps while Ahrish in unconscious. Nasiha now, with another quick prayer to the silent Kings, moves everything down to the gaping hole on Ifi's leg and flank and with infinite tenderness and patience, cleans the blood and tissue out of it first.
