Anatomy - Skin

A dolphin's skin is smooth, and very soft. It is constantly being sloughed off and replaced. It is also very sensitive to touch, and easily scarred. Virtually all adult dolphins carry at least a partial record of their interactions with companions, enemies, and the environment, encoded in an array of scars, nicks and notches on their skin. This has been useful to researchers as an aid to identifying individual animals.
